The Prosody of Bisyllabic and Polysyllabic Words in Hong Kong Cantonese
نویسندگان
چکیده
This is a phonetic study of the prosody of bisyllabic and polysyllabic words in Hong Kong Cantonese. The values of the three prosodic properties, duration, F0, and intensity, of the words are determined by the type of tones on the component syllables of words as well as the position of the syllables in the words. The F0 characteristic of the citation tones is maintained, where they are realized on bisyllabic or polysyllabic words. With the same tone on the component syllables of words, the duration of the rime is noticeably longer in the final syllable than in the non-final. However, the F0 and intensity are lower for the final syllable of words. The duration of the syllable-initial consonant is longer in the initial syllable, if the consonant is an aspirate or fricative. However, the duration of the syllable-initial sonorant is shorter in the initial syllable. The duration variation of the unaspirated initial consonants of the component syllables of words is not significant.

The paper investigates the prosodic characteristics, including the temporal structure, F0, and intensity, of the monosyllabic number words (MNW) and compound number words (CNW), bisyllabic and trisyllabic, in Hong Kong Cantonese. Results of analysis show that (i) the rime durations of all the MNW in isolation are reduced when the MNW occur as component MNW in the CNW; (ii) not all the initial c...
متن کاملSyllable Fusion and Speech Rate in Hong Kong Cantonese
Syllable fusion is a Hong Kong Cantonese connected speech process, whereby edges of syllables are obscured by consonant lenition or deletion, and vowel reduction. More extreme fusion can simplify contour tones and merge the qualities of vowels that would be separated by an onset or coda consonant at more normal degrees of disjuncture between words. This paper investigates the influence of speec...
متن کاملA preliminary study of the temporal relationship between prosody and gesture in Hong Kong Cantonese
Previous studies of speech and gesture in intonational languages generally suggested that prosodic and gestural prominence are aligned with one another, pitch accented/ stressed syllable or the peak fundamental frequency (F0) of it being the prosodic anchor. A logical question to raise would be whether such alignment exists in tonal languages without lexical stress. To answer the question, this...
